Amongst the many great qualities of the late Earl of
Chatham, he sometimes amused himself with poetry, in which
there is no doubt he would have excelled if more momentuous
pursuits had not occupied his mind. The following is a
specimen of his talents in that line, and was addressed to
David Garrick, Esq; when he was on a visit some years ago
at Mount Edgecumbe:
Leave, Garrick, the rich landscape, proudly gay,
Docks, forts, and navies bright'ning all the bay;
To my plain roof repair, primeval fear!
Yet there no wonders your quick eye can meet,
